Hello and Welcome to our weekly update. This week's main focus was on creating the shareable favorites as a live feature for our users (as shared in the last newsletter), Designs for Extension in Scrolller features, and focusing on finding ways to provide more value to premium users for their money. Account Creation Drop witch hunt

In last week's newsletter, we shared a few hypotheses that might point us in the right direction on why our user account creation rate dropped to half. Previously we estimated that a drop in the number of users signing up had no impact on the number of new premium subscribers per day. In this week our data scientist conducted a historical analysis and revealed some new information.

Impact on New Premium Subscribers

The initial analysis was flawed because it did not take into account the premium CTA that was introduced on the 23rd July 2021. Taking that into account, we are seeing a drop-off of 7.7 subscribers (roughly 1/3rd of the total) daily after the categories were unlocked.

Preliminary Analysis of Premium CTA

Based on the above, the impact of the premium CTA may have been understated (the drop due to locking categories reducing it). Controlling for this drop in accounts, it seems that the premium CTA has been increasing premium subscriptions by 72%.

Test to Confirm:

Since the A/B test is taking too long, the team has decided to take a more direct approach and has decided to account lock the categories page again for a few days. If the number of user accounts created in a day spiked, we will know that this feature is the main reason behind it. In that case, we will try to come up with an alternate approach where categories remain unlocked but it also does not affect the scroller growth.

Impact of Pro-Metric Ads

In order to really pinpoint the impact of pro-metric ads, we wanted to evaluate it in terms of the dollar amount generated. A new event was added in google analytics to see if the user that clicked on Prometric Ad actually subscribed to premium or not. The addition of that event didn't help in terms of finding that dollar amount value we are aiming for as the filter didn't work as expected. While our stripe account continued to show new customers the new event was not counting any new customers. Our developers have been assigned the task to create new filters and events that will help us track that necessary metric to measure success.

Progress on Content Recommendation

Over the last week, we set up the evaluation and fine-tuning of the recommendation system. We analyzed performance metrics and searched for the best configuration for the task at hand. We are now confident that the created recommendations are as accurate as currently possible. Before we can deploy the system we still need to assess for which users it is functioning reliably and what recommendations are most interesting to the users. Further, we got in touch with an experienced recommendation system developer. He helped us realize the importance of the underlying infrastructure if we want to serve personalized content in big quantities. A newly hired DevOps developer will support us with the necessary changes.

We have started to focus on several new features that will make the scrolller experience more enjoyable for or user. Our target is to make the scrolller a go-to place for anyone who seeks content and wants to enjoy it to its fullest. This will help with user retention, increase in traffic, and more exposure for scrollers in the market. Some of the new features that we are planning to introduce are as follows:

  • Comments on posts:

    We decided to introduce a comment feature on scrolller as it can be a great way to increase engagement on the website. People love to share their views on social platforms and by introducing this feature we can give them an opportunity to communicate their thoughts and views with other people. Users can view comments on their posts and can engage in conversation by replying to them. This will be a fun addition to Scrolller.

  • Ability to tag other users in posts:

    Friends of the same interest love to share content with each other. On implementation of comments, users will be willing to tag their friends on posts. We are creating an interactive environment where users freely tag other users on posts. This feature will make the users want to come back to the scrolller to check comments and their notifications.

  • Notifications for users:

    A basic need to improve user activity on site is notifications. Notifications are a proven way to increase the usage of social media platforms. Our requirements are to prompt notification to the user on the following activities.

    • When any user follows your collection

    • When any user Likes your post

    • When any user comments on the post

    • When any user tags you in a post.

    • When you get listed on top 100 on the leader board

  • Ability to add personal information and profile pictures:

    Scrolller is growing fastly as an entertaining platform. We are in a phase of building Scrolller as an interactive community. Introducing a feature to add up personal information, profile picture and interest will not only expand the community but will also improve the user experience.

    Introducing an option to add some personal details. We are featuring a Sexual orientation slider so users can set their preferences according to the content they want to view.

Premium CTA Popups

The premium CTA popups continue to be a major success as our daily number of premium signups has trifold and continue to be stable at ~27 new subscriptions per day. with an all-time high of 40 new subscriptions in a single day. In the coming weeks, we will keep experimenting with the copies to see which one outperforms the other.

A/B Testing Copies for Premium CTA Popups

In last week we discussed how we added new labels in order to track the A and B copies inside scrolller. On Wednesday we came to know that the approach we used by distributing the A and B copies on multiple instances of scrolller was not working and we were only serving the A copies to all of our user bases. What is an A/B test without an A and B? 😄

Our developers immediately came up with a new plan, Where we decided to serve A and B copies to our users depending on their user's id in the database.

  • All the users with an id that is an even number will be served with copy A

  • All the users with an id that is an odd number will be served with copy B

Exclusive Features for Premium User

For making our premium community stronger we have decided to introduce some exclusive features that will make our premium users feel valued. After a lot of discussion and planning, we have decided to introduce the following new features for our premium community.

  1. Faster Hosting

  2. Premium users can download content directly from Scrolller with a download button.

  3. Custom Charge Code (Statement descriptor) to reflect on the bank statement.

  4. Account Recovery in case of deletion (All favorites, follows and Albums will be restored on request)

    • We save all data in case of account recovering but this is only available for a premium. Users can pay for premium and then recover their account

  5. Premium users can upload new content directly on Scrolller.

  6. Users can Feature their original content on Scrolller to gain reach and more views (After uploading)

  7. Multiple shareable albums for premium.

  8. Premium users can see the direct link to the content if available (Source Links)

User Generated Collections Progress

Regarding the shareable favorites, we had a really slow week in terms of development. We believe that by this weekend it will be in the testing phase. The major target of this user-generated collection is to encourage users to share the content on social media. It will help drive traffic from popular social media to Scrolller.

Backend Progress:

  • All the components are made and the backend is pretty made ready to serve data.

  • Gallery view is still an issue and our developers are working hard to tackle this blocker.

  • Leaderboard-backed is implemented but needs work on the front end.

Frontend Progress:

  • Only some wiring left that and we will be ready to test the feature on dev and be able to push it to production next week.

  • Incentives for top 100 users in the leaderboard.

Referral Incentives for Inviting Friends on Scrolller

To get more users from social media to our platform and encouraging users to share scrolller content in their circle, we are working on a new feature where users can use their referral code/link with their friends. On successful signups of active accounts, the user will be given a month of premium subscription free of cost.

Social Media Update

As for the social traffic update, our profile reaches and engagement was up only for Facebook but not for Twitter and Instagram. As a result, Facebook likes and followers increased by over 40 respectively. Twitter and Instagram are at an average of 10-15 followers. Expanding our social reach is important because it will help us reach more and more people who could be interested in our platform. As such, an important thing we need to do is continually analyze the state of the current website traffic from social media links in the next few weeks to be able to know where we stand and pick the best way forward. We are committed to building an amazing Scrolller team and like sharing the steps (building in the open) we are taking on our journey. Here's what has been happening behind the scenes this week to get us close to making Scrolller a better product for all users.

This week I mainly refined exclusive features for our premium users. I was also into Dev Testing and A/B test analytics reviewing for premium CTA — Mannan.

I have largely been tackling collections display and managed to set up automatic gcloud build to help with collections testing. Also fixed some issues with server deployment — Karol

Mine has a lot to do with the videos. I was able to record, edit, revise and animate all the necessary videos for Show Search Functions — Lavanya.

Remember I told you I had embarked on researching both GA and A/B testing the last time? Well, my main highlight this week is finishing a historical A/B test and collaborating with some team members to see how we can formally do A/B tests for unlocked/locked categories in a way that is integrated with our analytics — Matt

I was able to look into and started with the Apache Spark setup. I also got started with code structuring and looking forward to tidying it up and make it ready for Github —Tim

I have been concentrating on improving our user design experiences. This week I was able to achieve designs on 'Invite Friends Pop Up, and 'Account Settings'. I also enjoyed helping create visual graphics for our newsletter — Marité

As part of dev, I got busy getting TS backend running as well as refactoring the frontend web requests to sync well with the backend — James

For the most part, interviews, team progress, hires, on-boarding, and most importantly, pitch decks and plans to meet old and new investors have kept me busy this week — Chris

The team has decided since all the features of the old scroller are added and enhanced in the current scrolller, running the previous version is using the necessary resources which can be utilized in the betterment of the current scrolller.
